Guadalajara, the city that never sleeps…EVER! This was my home for five weeks in the summer of 2006. I spent my days dancing with, learning from, teaching, listening to and laughing with the residents of the impoverished areas of Tonalá and spent my nights absorbing the unique culture and atmosphere of the second biggest city in Mexico, Guadalajara. It was a summer that would, quite honestly, change my life.

My host family was amazing. They were the sweetest people and made me feel like part of the family in no time. My host mom Marina worked during the days, but would always come home, make dinner and spend time with the family. My host brother Oscar was one of the coolest people I have ever met. He was like the big brother I never had.

I knew I would like Mexico, because I had seen one Mexican film. The fact that Mexico, to me, was somewhere between the US and the Amazon, where men, (predominantly called Jose), wore sombreros and twisted their moustaches whilst standing beneath a cactus, illustrates the extent of my innocence and total ignorance of this wonderful country that I have come to know and adore.

'Random' is the one of the words, among many others, that I think describes Mexico best. Yes, Mexico is vibrant, colourful, friendly, laid-back, different, beautiful, and everything else you would imagine it to be. However it is also a country of many contrasts, many contradictions and just very....random!

'If Projects Abroad said to me 'Describe your time in Mexico in four words.they would be 'Time of my LIFE!'
I have so many fantastic memories and I could tell people about them all day, everyday. From 'La Mutualista' where the volunteers met for salsa, to 'Libelula' for the free cookies (!!) and my time travelling around other parts of Mexico, all of it was absolutely amazing.
